Trying to define "Scriptures" has the opposite effect of limiting their reach. Many verses proclaim Scriptures to be the Brahman / Almighty / embodiment of God.
I like to look at attributes (लक्षनाम् / லக்ஷணகள்) that are typically associated with Scriptures:
1. They are timeless (i.e., the message is not specific to a particular time frame)
2. They command the path for righteous living. सासनात् इति सास्तिरम् / சாஸனாத் இதி சாஸ்திரம்
3. They appeal to all beings. They do not discriminate by gender, nationality, religion, language etc.
4. They are aphorisms (i.e., state the truth with authority)
For the purpose of this blog, I plan to use the above attributes as guideline to select the Scripture that I write about or from. Examples are - Vedas (श्रुति / ச்ருதி), Vedaangas (स्मृति / ஸ்ம்ருதிகள்), Epics (इतिहासम् / இதிஹாஸங்கள்) and Fables (पुराणम् / புராணங்கள்).
